Since 2011, the ongoing internal conflicts and disagreements in Syria have led to the loss of over 500,000 lives and countless injuries. Millions have been forced to flee the country, while the region’s infrastructure has been completely destroyed. The economic crisis has made access to healthcare nearly impossible.
Since the first day of the crisis, we, as Earth Doctors, have stood by those in need. Following the regime change on December 8, 2024, we have been able to expand our areas of operation. As of December 11, we have:
Increased our service capacity with both our mobile health teams and permanent health centers to continue addressing the most urgent needs in the region. We are continuing our work to rebuild a healthcare system where everyone can receive services under equal conditions and to ensure its sustainability.
WHAT IS HAPPENING IN SYRIA?
The Syria crisis, which began in March 2011, has displaced millions of people and condemned the region’s population to live under extremely difficult conditions. Displaced refugees are struggling to access basic needs such as shelter, hygiene, and healthcare, while the economic crisis is worsening food insecurity and poverty.
According to the latest report from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the number of people in need of humanitarian aid in Syria has reached 16.7 million, with 6.8 million people displaced. Approximately 90% of the population lives below the poverty line, and 12.9 million people are facing food insecurity. The situation was further aggravated by the earthquakes in February 2023.
WHAT ARE WE DOING IN SYRIA?
Since the beginning of the Syrian crisis, Earth Doctors has been providing healthcare services to those affected by the crisis in Syria and the surrounding region. Until 2018, we regularly sent volunteer health teams to Syria to carry out surgeries and examinations. We established a blood bank, a pharmaceutical warehouse, and laboratories, and supported the healthcare system by supplying medical and medical materials.
As the impact of the crisis increased within Turkey’s borders, we began offering primary healthcare services and psychosocial support to Syrian refugees. Starting in 2018, we prioritized sustainable healthcare services and established the following health centers:
At our permanent health centers, we provide services such as examinations, treatments, surgeries, distribution of medical supplies and medications, maternal and child health services, nutrition health services, primary healthcare services, and obstetric care. We also continue to send volunteer health teams to the region to carry out internal and surgical operations. With your support, we have reached over 1 million people through our work at the health centers.
